You want to keep the building free of any blemishes and clutter, you want to keep your employees healthy and working productively and you want to give your guests and visitors a great first impression of your business. For many reasons, owning right commercial vacuums, as well as other cleaning products, is very important.

In this review, we will be looking at seven different commercial vacuums from companies like Hoover, Oreck and Sanitaire. We will point out their strengths and weaknesses, and then declare the best vacuum for your building or locale in mind.

Top 7 Commercial Grade Vacuum Comparison

1. Oreck Commercial Upright Vacuum

Oreck is a brand of vacuum cleaners that has been around for many decades. While this vacuum may look the part, it is not your grandfather’s vacuum by any means. Weighing at eight pounds, this vacuum is great for general office buildings.

You are certain to get a performance that exceeds expectations, with a vacuum brush that spins at 5000 to 6500 rotations per minute (RPM). The suction is certainly powerful enough and this vacuum is safe to use on both carpet and hard floors.

All the controls are right on the handle of the vacuum. If you need to turn the vacuum off, the switch is right at your fingertips, and not further down like many other vacuum cleaners.

This is a flexible vacuum that can lean back very low. It can vacuum underneath desks and furniture with a 12-inch clearance or more. Just because it is an upright vacuum doesn’t mean it cannot clean underneath large objects.

The cord is 40-feet long, allowing you to vacuum multiple rooms without pulling the plug out. By plugging the power in a hallway, you can clean all the rooms surrounding it fairly easy.

With all of that said, this is not a great vacuum to use on high pile carpet. It can only be used on low pile carpet, or else you will need some strength to drag the vacuum across the room. Furthermore, this vacuum has no warranty, and Oreck explains that only their residential vacuums have them.

  • Has a powerful suction
  • Can reach under furniture
  • Has a long cord
  • Comes with fingertip controls

  • Doesn’t work well on high pile carpets
  • Does not come with a warranty

2. Hoover CH30000 PortaPower Commercial Vacuum Review

Hoover offers us this unique canister vacuum that you wear like a messenger bag. It weighs as much as eight pounds. The canister contains the motor, the dust bin and the port for the hose to go in.

This vacuum comes with many different attachments for all your cleaning needs. You get a crevice wand, a dusting brush, an upholstery brush and more.

The hose can extend beyond the original length, allowing you to vacuum underneath furniture, high above walls and ceilings and more. Canister vacuums are known for their portability, but the extension of this hose makes it even more versatile.

The 33-foot orange power cord is not as long as Oreck’s cord, but is still rather long, allowing you to clean multiple rooms without having to relocate the source of power.

This vacuum is also a blower, so if you ever want to clean leaves out of a garage or blow sawdust out of tight corners in a workshop, this is a product that can help you in that regard.

This vacuum comes with a two-year warranty, which means that if something were to go bad with the vacuum in the first two years that you owned it, you can send it in and get a new one and no extra costs.

The downside of using this vacuum is that it just isn’t very comfortable. Not only does the handle make your hands and arms sore, but carrying the canister over your shoulder can also be tiring. That is eight pounds you have to carry for several hours at a time.

  • Doubles as a blower
  • Comes with a two-year warranty
  • Has an extendable hose
  • Has a long cord
  • Comes with many attachments

  • Is not comfortable to use

3. Oreck Professional Upright Commercial Vacuum Cleaner

This vacuum is a slight variation of the first Oreck vacuum. While the first Oreck vacuum is U2000R1, this Oreck vacuum is U2000RB1.

The only difference between the two vacuums is that this one has a permanent belt. It is guaranteed to work, will never slip and you should never expect any other problems with it. It is much stronger than the belt inside the other Oreck vacuum.

The problems with the Oreck vacuum, however, remain. It is not a great vacuum for high pile carpeting, and Oreck does not offer warranties for their commercial products, as nonsensical as that may sound.

  • Has a powerful suction
  • Can reach under furniture
  • Has a long cord
  • Comes with fingertip controls
  • Has a permanent belt

  • Doesn’t work well on high pile carpets
  • Does not come with a warranty

4. ProTeam Backpack Vacuums, Super CoachVac Commercial Backpack

ProTeam has come up with a backpack vacuum that goes on your back like a large canister. It weighs 11 pounds, but it is very comfortable when worn as intended. ProTeam touts this as a vacuum that you can use in crowded places such as schools and universities.

The one remark consumers have is that they look like a Ghostbuster while wearing it. If only Peter Venkman wishes he could clean up to 7,500 square feet in an hour. Compared to upright commercial vacuums, you can use this backpack vacuum to clan about three times as much square feet in a period of time.

This is also a cost-efficient vacuum that reportedly saves businesses around 77% in annual cleaning costs compared to using an upright vacuum.

This vacuum comes with several different attachments, including a crevice wand, an upholstery brush and more. This way, you can have the right tool for the right situation. The hose itself is flexible and you can reach just about anything in the room with it.

The cord itself is 50 feet long, meaning that you can get a lot of space in your building before you need to move the power cord. With the vacuum being on your back, you certainly have more freedom to move around and cover your floors in a short period of time.

ProTeam offers a three-year warranty on removable parts and a lifetime warranty on molded-on parts. Either way, they will see that you have a product that works and works well.

This vacuum also includes an advanced HEPA filtration system allowing any possible allergens to enter the vacuum and stay. This means that people will breathe healthier air and not worry about any allergic reactions.

They really try to make this vacuum as much of a convincing buy as possible. The thing is, though, if your goal is to clean your floors, then this is not a very good vacuum to use. The suction power, while it does make the vacuum serviceable, leaves much to be desired. It will not pick up dirt off from a floor unless you had a hard floor. You will need a separate vacuum to clean carpets.

  • Has a lifetime warranty
  • Has a HEPA filtration system
  • Saves money on utility bills
  • Has an extendable hose
  • Has a long cord
  • Comes with many attachments

  • Lack of suction power

5. Sanitaire SC3683B Commercial Canister Vacuum

This next vacuum comes to us from Sanitaire. This is a canister vacuum with two wheels, and is red and black in color. It weighs 10 pounds and the bulk of the work comes from its 7-foot hose.

There are multiple attachments that come with this vacuum, such as a crevice wand, extension hoses, a dusting brush and an upholstery brush. These attachments give you all the tools you need to vacuums multiple parts of a room, including floors, walls and other surfaces.

The suction power of this vacuum, however, is very good. The vacuum is able to clean high pile carpets without any trouble. It gets particles deep into the fibers of carpets, and also works well with low pile carpets and hard floors.

This vacuum also contains a HEPA filtration system. When it sucks any dander and other allergens in, they stay in, only leaving behind healthy air.

This canister vacuum comes with a two-year warranty upon purchase. If you have any problems with your vacuums, Sanitaire may give you a free replacement at no further costs.

The problem with this vacuum is that the cord is rather short. You will only be able to vacuum one to two floors tops before you have to pull out the cord and move it to another location. Having a longer cord is important so you can take stops less frequently, and unfortunately, this isn’t the vacuum that can allow you to do this.

  • Comes with many attachments
  • Has a HEPA filtration system
  • Comes with a two-year warranty
  • Has a powerful suction
  • Can reach under furniture

  • Has a short cord

6. Oreck Commercial XL XL2100RHS Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Oreck’s third and final vacuum is blue, rather than the traditional red, and it has a slightly bigger head, allowing you to cover more space in the same amount of time. It has many similarities with the other two Oreck vacuums.

It is a flexible vacuum that can reach underneath furniture, the switch is right on the handle and it still weighs just eight pounds. The permanent belt feature, however is not present with this XL commercial vacuum.

Are there any other new features? Well, there are “side edge brushes” that this vacuum has, and they do definitely help to clean in tight corners and underneath furniture.

There are also rubber bumpers that this vacuum has, so you won’t be able to harm any walls, furniture or baseboards while vacuuming. Accidents happen, and this is a useful feature to avoid any marks on walls.

The cord is downgraded, however, to 35 feet. It’s not a large drop from 40 feet, but we aren’t sure why this vacuum could have 40-foot cords either.

This vacuum has a one-year warranty, which is odd considering that the other Oreck commercial vacuums have no warranties. Perhaps this is a newer version?

This is a vacuum that is hard to navigate, however. The small wheels that it comes with equate to poor turning and swiveling. With larger wheels, you would be able to make tighter and easier turns, no problem.

  • Has a powerful suction
  • Can reach under furniture
  • Comes with fingertip controls
  • Can work in tight corners
  • Comes with a one-year warranty

  • Is hard to maneuver

7. Hoover C2401 Commercial Backpack Vacuum Cleaner Review

The last of two Hoover vacuums is a backpack vacuum that is rather small, but instead of going over the shoulder, it can rest easily on your back. It comes with a “chiropractor” design that is meant to not give pain or stress to you back. The canister overall weighs around nine pounds.

This vacuum comes with several different attachments such as a crevice tool, an extension hose, a dusting brush.

The power cord on this vacuum is just short of being the longest cord in the review, at 48 feet in length. You can go from room to room covering all floors and surfaces without any trouble.

This is also known to be a very quiet commercial vacuum. It’s not super quiet, but for a commercial vacuum, you won’t hear any motor loudly whirring or buzzing. At 66 decibels, that is as quiet as any vacuum can get, nowadays.

This vacuum has a HEPA filter built in, in which it helps to get rid of any allergens and reduce any and all exposure to harmful dust and dander.

Along with this vacuum, you also get a two-year warranty, so in case anything goes wrong with it, you can get it replaced free of any charges.

The downside to using this vacuum however, is that it just does not work well on carpets or rugs. It will be able to clean hard floors, no doubt, but any dirt from a carpet, and the dirt will stay there.

  • Has a HEPA filtration system
  • Has an extendable hose
  • Has a long cord
  • Comes with many attachments
  • Has a two-year warranty
  • Is very quiet

  • Doesn’t work well on high pile carpets

What to Look for Before Buying the Best Commercial Grade Vacuum Cleaner?

There are many things to consider when choosing the best commercial vacuum cleaner, as they are not one-size-fits-all products. What might be great for other business owners may not be what you need.

Do you need to clean carpet or hard floors?

If you own a building or space that is consisting of hard floors, you should rather choose a canister or backpack vacuum, as they are more portable and work better on multiple hard surfaces. An upright vacuum might scratch up a hard floor with its brushes that are made to run through high pile fibers.

If you own a building such as a hotel, an apartment complex or any other building that is dominant with carpeting, you will see better results with an upright vacuum. They have the brushes and power to lift dirt out of high piles, so another type of vacuum like a canister vacuum will not be as effective.

Do you want to clean other surfaces?

If all you want to vacuum and clean are floors, that is a job for an upright vacuum. They do the best when it comes to vacuuming floors. Upright vacuums, however, are not capable of reaching above floors to walls, ceilings and other surfaces. They should only be used to vacuum floors, or instructed otherwise from the vacuum manufacturer. If you want to clean only tile then you may check out our best vacuum for tile floors list.

If you have other surfaces that you want to clean, like windows, counters, furniture and tables, a canister or backpack vacuum will be beneficial to you. If you own a restaurant, school, or retail space where people frequently move around in, a canister or backpack vacuum will do great in cleaning tables, floors and other areas.

What kind of rooms does your building own?

With many objects and obstructions in a given room, such as an office building, bathroom or eating area, it would be better to have a canister or backpack vacuum which would allow you to move the hose around freely, if need be. It’s easier to simply pick the vacuum up and put it down where you want it to go, rather than wheel a large vacuum from point A to point B.

With that said, upright vacuums benefit more when you need to clean large, open spaces. Areas like lobbies, hallways and other places will be able to be quickly cleaned with a large, wide vacuum head that an upright vacuum has. Upright vacuums also allow you to better track how many floors you have covered in a room, and their wheels definitely make it easy for you to glide the head across the floor.

What are the advantages/Benefits of using a commercial grade vacuum?

Commercial grade vacuums are considered premium vacuums that are suitable for businesses and large households. There are many advantages that commercial grade vacuums have over standard vacuums, with the only real disadvantage being the price point. Here are all the advantages that you should take into consideration when choosing a commercial grade vacuum.

Different Forms

Commercial grade vacuums can come in all the forms that an affordable vacuum can.

Upright vacuums look just like the kind you often find in the household, and these are for general purpose cleaning in offices, eateries and other public areas. Upright vacuums traditionally do not involve a long hose to deal with.

Canister vacuums have a vacuum head connected to a dust bin and motor. Think of it as a shop vacuum. These vacuums have large dust capacities and are more flexible and navigable over upright vacuums. You generally control the vacuum using a hose, which is very light to handle.

Backpack vacuums are vacuums that you wear around your back. This way, the bulk of the vacuum cleaner is out of your way, and you are free to move anywhere you please to clean floors, tables, furniture and more.

Wet / Dry vacuums are specialty vacuums that are great for cleaning water and other liquids from floors and tables. Professional cleaning crews greatly benefit from owning one of these, as they work very well to remove spots and stains from high and low-pile carpets alike. These vacuums are generally some of the most expensive vacuums that you can buy.

Suction Power

Commercial grade vacuums only guarantee the best suction power possible. They are used for picking up debris effectively from the thickest of carpets and oldest of stains found on floors. These vacuums are much more effective than your standard vacuum cleaners.

Dust Capacity

Many commercial grade vacuums have very large dust bins for storing hours of debris that is to be collected throughout the day. With large dust bins, workers can vacuums floors upon floors in a single office building without having to empty it. While janitors and custodians often vacuum to clean commercial buildings, that isn’t to say that the canister doesn’t fill up more slowly, however. But you definitely are prepared for times when you have to do a full cleaning of your building from top to bottom.

Because many commercial vacuums are generally big, they come with various attachments to help you vacuum and do other cleaning tasks. Most vacuums come with a crevice wand for sucking up debris in tight spaces and inside of cushions. Others come with built-in compartments for cleaning products, in case you want to combine your vacuum with a cleaning cart.

Bagged vs Bagless Commercial Vacuum – Which is better?

There are bagged and bagless versions of commercial vacuums, just as there are for standard vacuums. Bagged vacuums came first, but owners have recently taken a liking to bagless vacuums. Regardless, there is one advantage that both bagged and bagless vacuums have over the other.

Bagged Vacuums

Bagged vacuums involve the transferring of debris inside of a disposable bag. The bag is flat at first, but the bag will fill up over time like a balloon. When the bag is full, you detach it from the vacuum and throw it away.

With bagged vacuums, there is no having to deal with contents inside the bag, as you simply toss the bag away without needing to open it. This is great for users that do not want to deal with potential allergens.

The downside is that buying bags for the vacuum is an ongoing expense. Furthermore, when you run out of bags, you cannot use the vacuum until you get more.

Bagless Vacuums

Bagless vacuums involve a detachable canister that you do not dispose of later; you simply take it out, empty it and put it back in. You do not buy more canisters, as you simply use the one that the vacuum comes with again and again.

Bagless vacuums equates to no ongoing expenses. Bagless vacuums hope to save you money, and you never have to worry about running out of bags.

The caveat to bagless vacuums is that you usually have to deal with the debris inside the canister. Not only do you need to empty the canister manually and get possible exposure to allergens, but you also might have to clean the built-in filter as well, which also contains allergens.

Commercial vs. Industrial Vacuum – Which is the Best?

Commercial and industrial vacuums are classified into two groups: Commercial vacuums are typically the upright kinds, and industrial vacuums are the motor and dust bin combo that is attached to a long hose. In a way, they both serve a slightly different purpose.

Commercial Vacuums

Commercial upright vacuums are best for floors. They have the features and abilities to lift dirt and other debris up from deep inside the highest pile carpets imaginable. They can also remove stains and spots from carpets very well, so if somebody spilled a drink, commercial vacuums make it easier for an individual to handle.

Industrial Vacuums

Industrial vacuums typically give you more freedom of where to clean. You do not have to clean just the floors if you do not want to, but you can also clean furniture, tables, surfaces and window sills. Not only does the light nature of an industrial vacuum allow you to do this, but these are generally safer to use on surfaces outside of floors and carpets.

Both types of vacuums are wonderful in their own unique ways, but if you were to ask us about which type is better, we would say the commercial vacuum. While not every commercial building may not own any public access furniture and tables, they all do have floors that people walk on. This means that it is super important to keep the floors clean so that employees are healthy and focused throughout the day.

Final Verdict

The best commercial vacuum that we are going with is the ProTeam Backpack Vacuums, Super CoachVac Commercial Backpack.

We understand that time is of the essence, and a backpack vacuum can help to cut time on vacuuming hard floors more so than an upright vacuum. When it comes to businesses, saving time and money is important, and we feel that it also does a decent job with other aspects as well.

If you have a business environment that is mostly hard floor, you will love this vacuum. We consider choosing another vacuum for businesses that are mostly carpeted, like Oreck or Sanitaire.
